Contralateral Movement is a fundamental aspect of human locomotion. When a toddler crawls, for instance, the synchronized movement of their opposite arm and leg is a type of contralateral movement called cross-crawl. This type of movement enhances concentration by facilitating the coordination between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, akin to a spark that ignites optimal brain function.
Although Contralateral Movement is a commonly used term for this type of movement, it is not limited to crawling alone. Rather, it's just one example of Contralateral Movement that begins in early childhood and continues to play a vital role in human movement and coordination throughout life.
Contralateral movement offers several benefits, one of which is its ability to strengthen the para-spinal muscles in a safer and more effective manner.
Your body benefits as a whole, when your brain communicates information, the Contralateral Movements creates a pattern that yokes your sensory systems responsible for balance, proprioception and vision. Because the brain is connected to the contralateral side of the body, movements on one side of the body activate the opposite side of the brain. For instance, the left hemisphere of the brain controls the right side of the body, and vice versa. In the event of a stroke that causes paralysis on one side of the body, the opposite hemisphere of the brain would be damaged.
When you train one side of the body, the muscles on the other side become strong as well, known as Contralateral strength training effect.
